Wait, are ashwagandha, maca and turmeric really all roots? While ashwagandha and turmeric are derived from roots, maca comes from the root-like hypocotyl (a part of the stem) of the maca plant, which is a cruciferous vegetable related to broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower.
